Things to do at the Beach with Your Kids

We love going to the beach with our family. Living on the West Coast, we take every opportunity to visit the ocean ever since our children were newborns. Some of my favorite memories are of chubby toddler hands holding little seashells. Even though we are a few hours away from the sea, we still manage to make it out to the beach at least 3-4 times a month. It's a cherished tradition that never grows old, and the sandy shores always beckon us, offering an array of exciting beach activities for kids.

Living a short drive from the Oregon coast, we love going to the beach all year round. Sometimes, it gets cloudy, and even when the sun is shining, we might feel a sprinkle of rain. But that's what makes our trips to the coast extra special!

In every season – whether it's warm summer days, crisp fall air, windy springtime, or the occasional sunny winter day – the beach is always awesome. The Oregon coast has really cool landscapes, especially when the weather is a bit moody. The misty shores and the sound of raindrops on the sand are some of the best things that make our beach days even more exciting.

With summer on the way, I made a list of fun beach activities for kids. It's like a summer checklist, and it works no matter if the weather is rainy or sunny. For our family, beach days are not just for one season; they're the best part of our adventures all year long. The sun, sand, and waves create awesome moments that stay with us, no matter what season it is. So, grab your stuff and come enjoy the beach with us, whether it's rainy or sunny, any time of the year!

Beach Activities for Kids

1. Look for Treasures

Who needs buried treasure chests when you've got the beach as your playground? We absolutely love taking easy breezy strolls along the shoreline with our little adventurers, on the lookout for the coolest seashells, shiny agate rocks, sea glass and anything else that sparks our curiosity! The best treasure-hunting times? Definitely after storms or during our winter beach visits. It's a beachy blast, turning every outing into a joy-filled adventure with tons of fun things to do at the beach with your kids!

2. Build Sand Structures

Building with sand is a blast for both kids and adults! You don't need fancy tools – let your imagination run wild, from crafting sand castles and cities to creating rivers. My 6-year-old son's favorite is building "rivers" and watching his little boats race down the tunnels next to the waters edge, while my daughter adores crafting and decorating castles with the treasures we've collected – sand dollars, shells, feathers, you name it.

3. Explore Tide Pools

Tide pools are right up there with treasure hunting for our kids. Check the tide schedules beforehand to pinpoint the best time for exploring in your area. During winter, we don rain boots, and in the summer, we opt for water shoes. The corals and rocky surfaces are a blast to explore, and our kids are on the lookout for starfish and crabs. To enhance the experience, we've even found pamphlets on native marine life to help identify all the fascinating creatures we encounter.

4. Catch Little Crabs

Those sand crabs may be a tad creepy, but they're also fascinating! They burrow into the wet sand and emerge to frolic where the waves crash on the beach. My kids' highlight of the day is catching them and giving me a good scare! Don't worry; they're harmless, and we always return them to the ocean after our little adventure.

Adding to the excitement, we often spot hermit crabs along the shoreline during our beach adventures. My kids adore these little creatures and sometimes leave a collection of shells beside them. Why, you ask? Well, in case these hermit crabs fancy a cozy new home! It's a charming twist to our beach exploration, turning it into a mini real estate adventure for our crustacean friends. Rest assured, these hermit crabs are harmless, and after our delightful encounters, we always make sure to gently return them where we found them. It's a captivating way to teach our kids about marine life and add an extra dose of wonder to our coastal escapades.

5. Jump in the Waves

It's a beach-day essential – playing in the waves! During the summer, my kids' absolute favorite activity is jumping in the waves or gleefully racing away from them. After running around, they take a break by relaxing on a floaty. Their dad likes to secure it, ensuring a safe and enjoyable lounging experience for the kids as they enjoy bobbing up and down with the waves.

6. Draw Pictionary in the Sand

Unleash your inner artist right there on the beach! Grab a stick and get creative by drawing pictures, writing words, or even setting up your own beach game. It's a fantastic way to bond with the family and test your artistic skills on the sandy canvas. And here's a handy trick: for little toddlers who love to keep busy, challenge them to draw the longest line they can! It's the perfect way to keep them happily occupied, especially if you're planning a long walk on the beach without having to stop every few feet.

7. Run with the Seagulls

Seagulls, those playful birds by the beach, can be a hoot to interact with. Your kids will have a blast running around, joining in the excitement, and capturing some quick video clips of their joyful moments. These birds are full of energy and always ready for a little beach fun, and your kids can certainly keep up with them!

8. Go to a Local Aquarium

For a refreshing change of scenery, why not plan a trip to a local aquarium? It's a captivating attraction that allows you to dive into the mysteries of the deep without getting wet. Your children will be mesmerized by the underwater wonders and the opportunity to get up close to marine life they might not encounter at the beach. Plus, it's a perfect choice for a rainy day, as many aquariums offer indoor exploration. Often, these attractions provide more than just aquatic exhibits; you'll find engaging art activities and little games that keep the whole family happily occupied for hours. It's a fantastic way to turn a dreary day into an unforgettable indoor adventure!

11. Balance on Driftwood

Challenge your kids' balance and agility by seeking out driftwood on the beach. Kids can have a blast walking along these natural balance beams, and it's an excellent way to improve their coordination while having a great time. However, safety always comes first! Never approach large logs in the ocean; they can easily crush you. Only play on driftwood logs that are secure and safe. Ensure they are well-grounded in the sand and far from the shore before letting your little ones enjoy this exciting beach activity.

12. Make a Fire

If the beach allows it and you're prepared, why not savor a beachside meal? Gather driftwood to build a campfire (safely, of course), and let the kids help roast hot dogs or marshmallows. There's something magical about the taste of a beach-cooked meal. And if you're a bit nervous, many beach parks have designated fire pits, providing a worry-free way to enjoy your seaside feast.

14. Play with a Beach Toy

While most of the things on this list require no extra gear, this wave toy is an exception and definitely worth the hype! These fun little contraptions provide endless amusement as they glide into the water and return to the shore. It's an ideal way to get kids moving and giggling under the sun. For an extra dose of beach fun, consider inflating a vibrant beach ball or chasing after a frisbee – simple additions that amplify the joy of seaside play.

15. Dig a Hole

Sometimes, all it takes is a simple hole in the sand to keep the little ones entertained for hours. It's incredible how much joy they can find in digging the biggest hole! Just remember, while digging, always keep safety in mind. Make sure the hole is not too deep and has gently sloping sides to avoid collapsing. A park ranger gave us a tip of only making it as deep as your child's legs to prevent them from accidentally being buried or drowning. Additionally, make sure to cover the hole back up so no one falls in after you leave. Beach adventures are all about making wonderful memories, and safety is a top priority!

Make cool rivers in the sand! Use your hands or little tools to dig paths. Add rocks and seashells along the sides. When the waves come, they fill your rivers with water. Watch and see how the water flows around, making a fun beach map. It's super cool to create your mini-world on the sand!

So, whether it's summer, spring, fall, or even a sunny winter day, this exciting list of beach activities for kids is perfect for family fun and creating lasting memories by the ocean. Enjoy the waves, the sand, and the sunny days while making the most of the countless things to do on the beach with kids. Your beach adventures are bound to be unforgettable, no matter the season.

Keep an eye out for unique formations like mesmerizing blowholes that shoot water into the air, creating a spectacular display. On the Oregon coast, we particularly enjoy the wonders of the Devil's Punch Bowl, where the ocean water swirls and churns, offering a captivating experience.
